One groan that is heard throughout every office the day after all of the Christmas festivities is “How could I have eaten that much?” or some variation thereof. So now we have that “holiday weight” clinging to our bellies and the tradition of forming a New Year’s Resolution hanging over our heads. The classic, “This year, I will lose weight!” rings loud and true and is a promise made with good intentions, however, who finds they can really keep a resolution like that? Maybe it’s not the resolution but the way that the resolution is approached…

Pilates is a great way to shoot for a weight loss goal for those who are strapped for time and have a problem with commitments (such as a locked in, expensive gym membership). Doing Pilates for even just 15 minutes a day will have you seeing an improvement. But where to start and how to make it a resolution that actually gets resolved?

If you are a person who’s daily physical activity is walking from a farther parking space in a strip mall, then don’t jump into a weight loss resolution goal with everything that you have. If you do this and go hard right out of the gates, you are liable to run out of steam and fall off soon after starting. Easing into this new routine of a daily Pilates schedule is the best initial approach that will see the best long term results.
  2. Make realistic changes and goals for YOU. Saying to yourself on day one, “I am going to cut out all carbs and sugar and do Pilates for an hour every day and lose 5 pounds in my first week!” is setting your entire mission up for failure and disappointment. Instead, your first week, aim to just do a Pilates routine every day, even if it is just for 10 or 15 minutes. If you get to the end of the week and find that you have easily fulfilled this step, move on to giving yourself more of a challenge. Bump it up to every day, but aiming for 20 minutes a day, and go from there. Setting unrealistic goals can make you lose confidence in yourself making it difficult to continue. When you make a plan, one that starts out just right for you, and you succeed, it is an elating feeling and pushes you to move one to the next step.
  3. Keep it focused on the positive! Instead of dwelling on and being bitter about having to decline drinks after work to go home and have a healthy meal and a Pilates session, keep your reasons and goals in mind. You aren’t doing this to preform torture, you are doing this to be a healthier, happier you. If you miss a day of workouts, don’t beat yourself up over it, it happens. Just get yourself back on track the next day and pound out that workout. Keeping your mind clouded by the slip-ups or the things that you are “lacking” because of your resolution will only bring you down and serve no purpose or place here.
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you are having trouble with a workout or not seeing the results you were anticipating, don’t just keep plugging away and getting frustrated. Find someone to ask for help or advice. A friend who is well-versed in Pilates and weight loss is great and convenient to have, however, we aren’t all that lucky. Heading to the library or bookstore and finding a book dedicated to Pilates and techniques is a good way to find answers, definitely better then a broad Google search. However, finding a studio with Pilates trainers tends to be the most accurate way to find the help you need. A person who can actually see you can give you advice based on YOU and what YOU are doing or not doing. Never be afraid to seek out one of these avenues.

We all make plans and resolutions and usually, we break them. These four tips are just some ideas on how to help give you that extra edge in keeping your Pilates Weight Loss Resolution. Don’t forget, that cookie weight has got to go somewhere!
